Beyond Phonics Series: Why Vision and Sensory Processing Deserve a Place in the Dyslexia Conversation

Reading is complex.


While phonics and structured literacy are essential components of learning to read, successful reading requires much more than decoding words on a page. It requires the coordinated work of language, vision, attention, memory, sensory processing, and the ability to access information efficiently.


Beyond Phonics is a research-based article series exploring the many systems involved in reading development and literacy success.

This series is not about replacing evidence-based reading instruction. It is about expanding the conversation.


The research is clear: dyslexia is a language-based learning difference, and explicit, systematic literacy instruction is critical. At the same time, we know that every learner brings a unique combination of strengths and challenges that can influence how they experience reading.


This series will explore questions such as:

  • How do visual skills influence access to print?

  • What role does sensory processing play in learning?

  • What can eye-tracking technology tell us about reading behaviors?

  • How do attention, executive functioning, and regulation impact literacy?

  • What happens when we combine evidence-based reading instruction with a deeper understanding of the whole learner?


Over my 25+ years as an occupational therapist, I have worked alongside children, families, and educators to better understand why some students work harder than others to achieve the same outcomes.


My work has led me to one guiding question:


| What is it costing this learner to access information?


Because performance does not always tell the whole story.

Two students may have the same reading score but experience completely different barriers. One may need additional support with phonological processing and decoding. Another may also experience challenges with visual efficiency, attention, sensory regulation, or processing demands that make reading more effortful.

Understanding those differences matters.


As part of my continued commitment to evidence-based literacy support, I am currently completing Orton-Gillingham training through the Dyslexia Training Institute. This training strengthens my understanding of structured literacy approaches and allows me to continue building bridges between literacy instruction, occupational therapy, and the science of learning.


My goal has never been to suggest that one approach explains every reading struggle.


My goal is to better understand the learner.


In my own work and research with middle school students, I have explored what happens when students receive a comprehensive approach combining explicit reading instruction, speech-language support, sensory-focused occupational therapy, and vision-focused occupational therapy. The findings demonstrated meaningful gains in reading performance, highlighting the importance of addressing the multiple systems that contribute to learning.


These results do not suggest that vision causes dyslexia or that vision-based approaches replace literacy instruction.

Instead, they highlight an important possibility:

When we identify and address barriers to access, students may be better able to benefit from the instruction they receive.


That is the purpose of Beyond Phonics.


To move beyond simplified conversations.

To look at the research.

To understand the whole learner.

And to ask a better question:


Not just, "How is this student performing?"


But, "How are they accessing learning?"
