Beyond Phonics Series: What If We're Asking the Wrong Question About Dyslexia?

A Question Parents and Educators Are Asking


My child has dyslexia. Why do they still struggle to read even after receiving support?

Or:

If dyslexia is a language-based disorder, why does reading look so physically difficult for some children?


These are important questions.


They reveal something we sometimes overlook:


Reading is not just about knowing sounds and words. Reading is an incredibly complex process that requires multiple systems in the brain and body to work together.


Dyslexia research has taught us a great deal about the importance of phonological processing and language development. However, understanding a child's reading experience requires looking beyond a single skill.


The question may not only be:


Does this learner have dyslexia?


The question may also be:


What factors are affecting this learner's access to print?


What People Think

There are two common thoughts that often appear in conversations about dyslexia:


Thought #1:


Dyslexia is caused by vision problems.


This is not supported by current research.


Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental learning difference primarily associated with difficulties in phonological processing—the ability to recognize, manipulate, and connect sounds with written language.


Vision problems do not cause dyslexia.


Thought #2:


Because dyslexia is not caused by vision, vision has nothing to do with reading difficulties.


This is where the conversation becomes more complicated.


While vision does not cause dyslexia, reading is undeniably a visual activity.


Every time we read, our eyes must:

  • move accurately across a page

  • focus on words

  • coordinate both eyes together

  • maintain attention

  • process visual information quickly

  • communicate information to the brain


When these systems are inefficient, reading may require additional effort.

This does not create dyslexia.

But it may affect how easily a child can access written information.

What Does the Research Say?

Dyslexia Is Primarily a Language-Based Difference

Decades of research have shown that dyslexia is strongly connected to differences in phonological processing.

Learners with dyslexia may experience difficulty with:

  • recognizing individual sounds in words

  • connecting sounds to letters

  • decoding unfamiliar words

  • developing automatic word recognition

Structured, explicit literacy instruction remains the foundation of effective dyslexia intervention.

This is why evidence-based approaches such as structured literacy are so important.


Reading Requires Coordinated Visual Skills

Although dyslexia is not a vision disorder, reading depends heavily on visual processing.

Research in eye movements during reading has demonstrated that skilled readers and struggling readers often show different patterns of eye behavior.

When we read, our eyes do not move smoothly across every word.

Instead, they:

  • briefly stop on words (fixations)

  • rapidly jump between words (saccades)

  • occasionally move backward (regressions) to reread information

Research by Keith Rayner, one of the leading researchers in eye movement and reading, demonstrated how these eye movement patterns provide valuable information about how people interact with text.

Students who struggle with reading often demonstrate less efficient eye movement patterns, including longer fixations and increased regressions.

Importantly:


These eye movement differences are generally understood as reflecting reading difficulty—not causing dyslexia.


That distinction matters.


Vision Is More Than 20/20 Eyesight

Many people think vision simply means:

"Can this learner see the letters clearly?"

But efficient reading requires much more.


A learner may have clear eyesight and still experience challenges with:

Visual Efficiency

  • eye teaming

  • focusing

  • tracking

  • maintaining visual attention

Visual Processing

  • recognizing patterns

  • organizing visual information

  • interpreting what is seen

Visual Attention

  • finding important information

  • maintaining attention on a page

  • shifting efficiently between information


These skills influence how comfortably and efficiently a reader interacts with print.


What About Sensory Processing?

Emerging research suggests that dyslexia may involve differences in how the brain processes information from multiple sensory systems.

Research by Usha Goswami and others has explored how sensory timing and processing differences may contribute to the reading challenges experienced by some individuals with dyslexia.

This does not mean dyslexia is a sensory disorder.

Rather, it highlights an important idea:


Reading requires the brain to rapidly integrate information from multiple systems.


Language, vision, attention, memory, and sensory processing all contribute to successful learning.

The Difference Between Performance and Access

This is where we need to shift the conversation.

Two students may receive the same reading score.

On paper, their performance looks identical.

But their experience may be completely different.

One student may struggle primarily with decoding.

Another may decode accurately but experience visual fatigue, inefficient tracking, or difficulty maintaining attention while reading.

The outcome may look the same.

The pathway is different.

This is why:

Performance does not always tell the whole story.

Understanding access helps us understand the learner.

What This Means in Practice

A comprehensive approach to supporting struggling readers should include:

1. Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction

Students with dyslexia benefit from explicit, systematic instruction targeting:

  • phonological awareness

  • decoding

  • spelling

  • fluency

  • comprehension

2. Understanding the Whole Learner

Educators and professionals should consider additional factors that may influence learning, including:

  • attention

  • executive functioning

  • sensory regulation

  • visual efficiency

  • language development

3. Individualized Support

Not every struggling reader needs the same intervention.

The goal is not to replace one approach with another.

The goal is to understand:


What does this learner need in order to access reading?
